random word of the day: HAPPY HUMP DAY!

Happy Hump Day! :D

 HUMP DAY OR HUMPDAY :

Wednesday

Middle of the week

The rest of the week towards Friday is a downhill ride

Implying that you have to get "over the hump" before you can anticipate the weekend.

You feel relieved that tomorrow is Thursday, then Friday, then the weekend.

ü

a DOWNHILL RIDE – jazda z górki (something very easy, when you cycle and you don’t have to use much force because you’re going downhill)

to IMPLY – sugerować (to suggest)

a HUMP – garb (something sticking out on a road or on a camel’s back)

to GET OVER THE HUMP – pokonać przeszkodę, mieć najgosze za sobą (to get past the most difficult or dangerous part of an activity or period of time)

to ANTICIPATE – oczekiwać (to look forward to, to wait for)

to FEEL RELIEVED – odczuwać ulgę (happy that something unpleasant has ended)

THEN – potem (later)

WARNING!

Some people make jokes about Hump Day because the word ‘hump’ has also another, more NSFW meaning: to have sex.

NSFW – nieodpowiednie w miejscu pracy  Not Safe For Work, used to describe Internet content generally inappropriate for the typical workplace)

HOW-TO: Shop at a gas station

Hello :)

What happens when after celebrating your birthday the night before you are denied the one thing you need the most: your energy drink of choice?

Watch and see for yourself :)

to BE DENIED SOMETHING – ktoś nam czegoś odmawia (somebody doesn’t want to let us have or do something)

OF CHOICE – ulubiony (favourite)

A selection of  lines from the video:

I can’t sell this to you. It’s Gatorade, so it’s for gals who have been working out hard and breaking a sweat.

I drink this this stuff all the time after I work out.

But you’re not sweating now.

GALS – dziewczyny (GIRLS)

TO WORK OUT – ćwiczyć (to exercise)

to BREAK A SWEAT – spocić się (to get wet and tired because you’ve exercised a lot)

I feel like you don’t have really a winning attitude right now.

to HAVE A WINNING ATTITUDE – myśleć jak zwycięzca, mieć zwycięskie myślenie, dosł. podejście (to be optimistic, self-confident, etc. just like a winner)

- Are you waiting for….

- a winning attitude? I just need the Gatorade.

It’s not designed for that. It’s designed for workouts. So if you made distracted decisions at night, …

DISTRACTED – tu: wywołane roztargnieniem, nieuwagą (here: not well thought out,
unplanned)

Let me let my manager make a ruling on this, ok?

You can just hold on a second, I’ll grab him.

to MAKE A RULING ON SOMETHING – wydać decyzję (to make a (final) decision)
I’LL GRAB HIM. – Pójdę po niego. (I will go and get him.)

You gotta be sweating to have that.

YOU GOTTA BE – You’ve got to, you have to – musisz

What do I need to do for the Gatorade?

This is awkward.

AWKWARD – niezręczne, kłopotliwe (embarrassing, uncomfortable)

Do you want me to do the chaturanga here in the gas station?

-These are nice. (about her sunglasses)

-Thank you.

Can I have a napkin?

a NAPKIN – serwetka (small square piece of cloth or paper used while you are eating for protecting your clothes or to clean your mouth or fingers)

Just use these little bags.

Is this gonna exert enough sweat? Enough to get back sweat on.

to EXERT – wykorzystać (to use)

BACK SWEAT – pot na plecach (when the upper back part of your body is wet)

HOW-TO: Ice Bucket Challenge

Hi guys!

Have you seen Bill Gates all cold and soaking wet yet?

No? You need to watch this video, then.

He’s a maverick if ever I saw one :D

SOAKING WET – przemoczony do suchej nitki (completely wet)

a MAVERICK – indywidualista (a person who thinks and acts in an independent way, often behaving differently from the expected or usual way)

IF EVER I SAW ONE – niewątpliwie (for sure, surely, used to emphasize that what you are saying is true)

As usual, I’ve picked a few sentences and phrases from the vid and listed them below :)

After I dump this bucket of ice on my head, I get to nominate …

to DUMP – rzucić, spuścić (to put down or drop something in a careless way)

a BUCKET – wiadro (a container with an open top and a handle, often used for carrying liquids)

I GET TO – wolno mi (I can)

TO NOMINATE – nominować (to choose)

a FOUNDER – założyciel (the person who started a company or an organisation)

a CEO – Chief Executive Officer (the person with the most important position in a company)

I’m glad to give to ALS.

ALS – stwardnienie zanikowe boczne, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (a neurodegenerative nerve disease that slowly destroys the brain's ability to move the body, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, after the beloved baseball player whose career it ended.

It’s a great cause.

a GREAT CAUSE – szlachetny cel (a great, noble reason for doing something)

I want to accept this challenge.

to ACCEPT A CHALLENGE – przyjąć wyzwanie (to decide to do something scary or difficult or simply unpleasant, as in this case.)

I want to do it better than it’s been done.

I’ve been working on this … got this design.

a DESIGN – projekt (a drawing or set of drawings showing how a building or product is to be made and how it will work and look)

There we go.

THERE WE GO – właśnie tak (We have done a good job.)

It’s gonna be great.

I’m here to join the people bringing attention to Lou Gehrig’s Disease by taking the ALS ice bucket challenge.

to JOIN – dołączyć (to be part of people who do the same thing.)

to BRING ATTENTION TO – zwrócić czyjąś uwagę na (to make people look at something or think about something)

a DISEASE – choroba (a sickness, an illness)

I’m gonna challenge three more people.

Consider yourself challenged. – Rzuciłem wam (dosł. tobie) wyzwanie (I’ve just challenged you.)

to CONSIDER – postrzegać (to think of yourself as)

You’ve got 24 hours. Good luck!
